CSV - Ensure that the appropriate Decimal Separator, Separator, Enclosure, and Unit system are selected to prevent formatting issues when opening the file on your local machine. The choice of CSV separators determines how values, especially numbers with decimals are stored in the CSV file. This becomes critical when opening the file in Excel, as mismatched separators can lead to misinterpretation of data. For example:
-
If Excel is configured to use the period (.) as the decimal separator and the CSV file also uses a period (.), the number 2.345 will appear correctly in Excel as 2.345.
-
However, if Excel is set to use the comma (,) as the decimal separator, and the CSV still uses a period (.), Excel may misinterpret 2.345 as 2345, resulting in inaccurate values.
This issue is further amplified when working with high-precision values (e.g., 2.345678901234567890). In such cases, Excel might interpret the period as a thousands separator, turning the number into something like 2,345,678,901,234,567,890.0. These excessively large values may exceed Excel’s supported number range, causing the data to be dropped entirely—leaving the corresponding cells empty. To avoid these issues, it’s important to ensure that both Excel and the CSV file use the same decimal separator. You can do this in two ways, adjust the locale settings in Excel on your local machine to match the separator used in the CSV file or configure the decimal separator setting on the ChargePoint platform when generating a new report. This alignment ensures data is displayed correctly and prevents loss or misrepresentation of numeric values.
