Pay for Charging

Understand charging fees

How much will it cost to charge my car? Who sets prices for charging?

Stations on the ChargePoint network are independently owned, and each station owner or roaming partner decides how much it costs to use their stations. ChargePoint processes the payment for paid charging sessions, for the station owner or roaming partner. You can always check pricing in the app and filter for stations that are free to use.

The price you pay at any given ChargePoint station is subject to change at any time. We will notify you of upcoming pricing changes if you have enabled notifications in your ChargePoint account. If you are not using your ChargePoint account to access a station, other fees may apply.

Pricing on roaming partner stations is determined by the partner, and we pass through costs without any markup. Pricing on roaming partner stations might be different in the ChargePoint app from the pricing shown on the station. The price in the app is always what you will be billed.

Station owners or roaming partners may choose to charge by the kilowatt hour (kWh), by the hour, using a flat fee, minimum or maximum fee, or an overnight or idle fee. Some connections offer discounted pricing. Some station owners charge one price for the first hour or two of charging and a different price thereafter. If you have notifications turned on, we will notify you when there is a price change during a charging session.

Public ChargePoint stations are accessible through third-party apps and cards. Charging fees billed through third-party apps can be different from the price shown on the station and is determined by the company operating the card or app.

What are the pricing breakdowns I should be aware of?

  • Energy Rate: Specifies the rate calculated when the vehicle is actively charging. The rates may be determined by the station owner and/or the local regulation policies, designated for energy consumed per minute or per hour (applicable only to Canada).

  • Station Time (Parking Time) Rate: Specifies a time-based rate calculated when the vehicle is connected to the charging station.

  • Session Fee: Specifies a one-time fee applied upon initiating a charging session that is set by the station owner.

  • Minimum & Maximum Fee: Specifies a minimum and/or maximum fee that can be charged for a given session based on the pricing on a station (e.g. minimum fee $1.00, maximum fee $27.00).

  • Overstay Rate: Specifies a time-based rate calculated upon charging completion after a grace period or after the maximum parking time has been reached by the driver.

How do I pay for charging?

When you sign up for a free ChargePoint account, you provide your payment details (credit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayPal) or pay via roaming agreements with other charging network apps and RFID cards. You will never be charged if you only use the free stations or charge at home with ChargePoint Home.

If you cancel your account, we will refund the remainder of your balance. To update or remove your payment information at any time, navigate to Account > Payment in the app.

What payment methods can I use?

ChargePoint accepts credit or debit cards, PayPal, Apple Wallet and Google Pay. To update your payment information at any time, navigate to Account > Payment in the app.

What if the price in the ChargePoint app is different from the price on a roaming station?

ChargePoint believes in making public charging affordable and reliable for everyone. The prices in the ChargePoint app reflect the prices that are set by our third-party network partners. We pass through costs with no markup. Sometimes prices in the app might be slightly different from those that are displayed on the station. Drivers will always be billed with the price shown in the ChargePoint app at the start of a session.

Can I get an invoice or receipt for my charging session?

There are five ways to get a receipt or invoice from your ChargePoint account for your charging session:

If you charged at a station with your ChargePoint driver account using Tap to Charge, your ChargePoint app or ChargePoint card:

Visit Account > Notifications in the ChargePoint app to set up automatic receipts for charging. You can also select the Activity tab at the bottom to see payment info for recent sessions and download Monthly Statements.

If you charged on a ChargePoint station using a roaming partner RFID card:

For roaming sessions, your e-mobility service provider defines the terms and prices of charging, and also issues the receipt for you. Please contact your service provider if you need a receipt for your session.

If you charged at a ChargePoint station using a credit or debit card:

Your receipt can be downloaded at https://driver.chargepoint.com/search-receipts. Please have the details of your payment card ready to verify that the receipt is yours.

Note: Some of our larger partner operators in Europe, including Instavolt, EG Group and EV Point, will provide receipts via their own websites.

If you charged at a ChargePoint station using Apple Pay or Google Pay:

Your receipt can be downloaded at https://driver.chargepoint.com/search-receipts. Please have the details of your payment card ready to verify that the receipt is yours.

You may need to look up your device’s virtual card number:

iPhone or Apple Watch

  • Open your Wallet app.

  • Tap the payment card used for the session.

  • Tap the three dots button on the top right.

  • Tap Card Number and refer to the Apple Pay number displayed.

Android

  • Open Google Pay app.

  • Tap Payment.

  • Choose the payment card you used.

  • Scroll down to the bottom to find the Virtual Account Number.

If you used a domestic European debit card, such as Girocard, Pinpas or carte bleue:

Our automatic system can only fetch receipts for such cards if they have a 16-digit, credit card–style card number. If your card has such a number, the same instructions apply as for credit and debit cards. If not, please reach out to Driver Support for assistance. Have the exact amount that was billed to you ready, as well as the date and approximate time of charging in order to identify your receipt correctly.

How do I change my payment option?

ChargePoint offers the drivers in the United States an option to pay after each charge or carry an account balance and use auto-reload. It is easy to update your preference in the ChargePoint app.

To change your payment type, complete the following steps:

  1. Log in to the ChargePoint app.

  2. Open the main menu and select Account.

  3. Choose Payment.

  4. Tap Payment Type and select Pay as you go or Auto reload.

  5. Your account will start using the new payment type on the first day of the following month after you make the change. If you switch from auto-reload to pay-as-you-go, any balance you have on your account will be used before you start to pay your fee after each charge. Your balance does not expire.

With auto-reload, the first time you use a public station with a fee, we will load your account with $10. When your account goes below $5, we will reload your balance based on the recent activity.

With pay-as-you-go, each time you charge at a station with a fee, your payment info on file will be billed.

Does ChargePoint offer any promo codes or discounts for public charging?

Many ChargePoint station owners offer promotions to their customers. Check with the business where you charge to see if offers are available.

Does ChargePoint have idle fees?

Who pays for charging my company car in public?

If your workplace charging policy includes paid public charging for business purposes, your provider will cover the cost for business charging, and you will pay for any personal charging. Please select Business or Personal in the app before starting a charge.

For any personal charging sessions that are not covered in your charging policy, you might pay a fee. For personal charging sessions, you will have to provide payment information. You can do this when you create your ChargePoint driver account or at any time in your profile section on the app. The first time you use a station with a fee, you will be charged £10, which is kept as a balance on your account so you are ready to charge wherever you go. If you only use free stations, you will never be charged.

Who pays for home charging sessions for my company car?

You will be reimbursed for home charging up to the maximum rate allowed by company policy.

Note: You will only be reimbursed for business charging sessions as outlined in your company’s reimbursement policy. You will pay for any charging sessions that are not covered by the reimbursement policy, including all personal charging.

How much will I get reimbursed for charging my company-provided EV at home?

Your employer determines how much you will be reimbursed for charging. You can enter your energy tariff in the app, but the amount that is eligible for reimbursement is capped by your employer. Verify the company policy with your employer.

If I have a company-provided EV, how will I know if I have received my reimbursement?

If you have added a bank account in the ChargePoint app, you will receive an automatic direct payment to that account. The payment is made at the beginning of each month, and you can check your bank statement for proof of reimbursement.
