How do I charge at a roaming network partner station?
Roaming stations are public stations operated by third-party networks that have partnered with us to make EV charging a seamless experience. Each roaming partner decides how the charging experience works, so they may be slightly different. Check the ChargePoint app for details. In most cases, you should be able to use the Start Charge button in the ChargePoint app to activate the station, then plug in. Some roaming partner stations may require you to use a ChargePoint account to start a charge. Not all roaming partner stations can provide status notifications. Drivers will always be billed based on the price shown in the ChargePoint app, even if it is different from the price shown on the station.
Do ChargePoint stations offer the NACS connector?
Yes. ChargePoint is committed to delivering the best charging experience possible to drivers of all EV makes and models. We offer many stations with optional NACS connectors.
As ChargePoint generally does not own or operate the stations where drivers charge, it is up to each site owner and administrator to decide what connectors to offer. We are constantly working with all our customers, partners and drivers to build the best charging network for all. Drivers can always check the app to find out if a charging station is compatible with their vehicle.
If you own an EV that uses a NACS connector, we have multiple home charging options for you, in addition to using an adapter. If you already own a ChargePoint Home Flex station, you can order a NACS cable conversion kit to switch to a streamlined NACS cable. Alternatively, you can also buy ChargePoint Home Flex with a NACS cable.

ChargePoint has NACS solutions available for all AC (Level 2) and DC (Level 3) use cases.
I just got an alert that says, “Your vehicle is drawing very little power and may be fully charged.” What does it mean?
This notification indicates that your EV is almost fully charged. Check the ChargePoint app for more details on your charging session.
Why would a station show “Restricted Access”?
Station owners can set a station to Restricted Access if it is not accessible to all drivers. For example, a station might be reserved for use by customers or employees only or located behind a gate or in a private garage.
Why am I seeing “you are not using a ChargePoint account” when I tap my phone on a station?
Make sure that you have signed in to your ChargePoint account and enabled the Tap to Charge feature. This will resolve the issue.

EV charging 101
What are the different charging types and speeds available?
Level 1 and level 2 charging
An AC charging station supplies AC power to your car's on-board converter, which supplies DC power to the battery.
With Level 1 AC charging, you simply plug the cord that came with your EV into a standard household receptacle. An hour of Level 1 charging will add about four miles of range to your vehicle’s battery.
Level 2 AC charging requires a 240-volt outlet and J1772, Type 1 or Type 2, plug (compatible with most EVs). Level 2 chargers can add 25 to 50 miles of range per hour depending on station amperage and vehicle capabilities.
DC fast charging
With DC fast, or Level 3, charging, the station itself converts AC power to DC power before delivering it directly to your vehicle’s battery. DC fast chargers can charge vehicles quickly, adding 100+ miles of range in 30 minutes. DC fast charger plugs are SAE Combo (CCS1 in the U.S. and CCS2 in Europe), CHAdeMO and Tesla (as well as GB/T in China). Check the station details and your EV owner's manual to ensure that the station is compatible with your EV. Not every EV is capable of DC fast charging. If you think you will need a fast charge from time to time, make sure to ask about this option when buying your EV.
The charger is off board the vehicle and supplies DC power directly to the battery.
Tip: You can filter by connector type in the ChargePoint app to find stations that work for your EV.
What are the different public EV charging connector types?
North America
The North American standard connector for AC charging is a single-phase Type 1 plug, typically using the SAE J1772 connector.
There are three types of DC plugs available: SAE combo (CSS1), CHAdeMO and Tesla. The North American Charging Standard (NACS), developed by Tesla, combines AC and DC charging in one compact connector.
Europe
Since 2018, the standard connector in Europe for AC charging is a Type 2 plug. These three-phase plugs can charge faster because of the three additional wires that allow current to run through them.
The DC standard for an SAE Combo is CCS2, which is an enhanced version of the Type 2 plug.
Tip: Not every EV is capable of DC fast charging. If you think you will need a fast charge from time to time, make sure to ask about this option when buying your EV.
You can filter by connector type in the ChargePoint app to find stations that work for your EV.
What are the NACS, CCS and CHAdeMO connectors and who can use them?
NACS
The North American Charging Standard (NACS) is an EV charging connector type developed by Tesla and opened for use to other manufacturers in 2022. It is not yet considered an industry standard but is currently under review with the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) for such purposes. As of 2023, only Tesla vehicles are able to charge with a NACS connector. Several automakers have announced plans to release vehicles supporting this connector starting in 2025. NACS has not been released in Europe.
CCS connector
The “Combined Charging System” (CCS) is a standardized EV charging protocol that enables AC and DC charging using a single connector. It was developed by the Charging Interface Initiative (CharIN), a global consortium of EV manufacturers and suppliers, and certified by SAE.
The CCS protocol supports charging power levels from 3.7 kW up to 500 kW, depending on the capabilities of the EV and the charging station. This allows for a wide range of charging speeds.
Currently, most non-Tesla EVs in North America use the CCS Type 1 (CCS1) connector for DC fast charging. Tesla models may be able to charge at CCS1 stations using an adapter. Tesla models older than December 2021, may require a CCS retrofit in order to fast charge with NACS connectors. Tesla vehicles and ChargePoint stations in Europe use the CCS Type 2 (CCS2) fast charging standard.
CHAdeMO
CHAdeMO is a DC fast charging standard that has been used by some automakers in Asia. The CHAdeMO connector is available on ChargePoint Express stations.
Should I charge my EV to 100%?
No. it is not necessary to always charge your EV battery to 100%. In fact, unplugging at 80% will actually help extend the life of your EV battery. The charging speed slows way down after the 80% mark anyway, so getting that extra 20% can take a lot longer. Of course, when you need additional range for a particular journey, charging to 100% is totally fine.
How do I know how much driving range is available?
To find your EV’s driving range, refer to your vehicle manual. To see how much range you have remaining on your current charge, check the dashboard of your EV.
Can I charge my electric vehicle in any weather?
Yes. it is safe to charge your EV in any weather condition. However, you may want to avoid charging during a thunderstorm with lightning.

Use Waitlist or Notify Me
What can I do if all charging spots are busy?
If every charging spot is in use, do not worry, you have options. Sometimes you arrive somewhere — like work, a shopping center or the supermarket — and all the charging spots are being used by other EV drivers. Instead of circling the parking lot waiting for a spot to open up, use Notify Me or Waitlist in the ChargePoint app to find out when a charging station near you becomes available. Please note that these features are only available when charging on ChargePoint stations, not when using your ChargePoint account on a different charging station. Waitlist is not enabled on all stations; a host must enable it for you to access this feature.
Using Notify Me
With the Notify When Available button on the Station Details tab in the app, we will let you know when the EV in the selected spot has finished charging. When you get an alert, you can move your car and charge or decide not to charge — it is up to you.
To use Notify Me feature, complete the following steps:
-
Open the ChargePoint app and the map will show your location so you can easily find charging spots near you.
Tip: If charging spots are busy, they appear as blue pins in the app. Available spots are green.
-
Click on the blue (busy) station pin and access station details by clicking the info bar at the bottom of the screen.
-
Hit Notify Me to confirm that you want to receive a notification for that station. If there are other busy stations nearby, you can choose to be notified when any of them become available by selecting Any Station at This Location.
Tip: If Notify When Available does not appear, it means that at least one spot at the station is available for charging.
-
Move your car to charge as soon as you receive a notification that a spot is open. A spot will not be reserved if someone else gets there first.
-
If you do not need to charge anymore, you can hit Stop Notification under the Station Details tab.
Using Waitlist
To help more drivers like you charge their vehicles, some station owners have enabled the Waitlist feature, which lets you get in a virtual line to charge. The station owner decides how long a driver can stay at a station to ensure all drivers get an opportunity to charge. If you are already charging, you will be notified when it is time to move your vehicle so that someone else can charge.
To get in line with Waitlist, complete the following steps:
-
When all stations are in use, click Join Waitlist from the map view in the ChargePoint app or tap your phone or card at a specific station to add it to your Waitlist. You will remain in line until you either begin charging or leave the Waitlist.
Tip: If Join Waitlist does not show up in the app it means stations are available or the Waitlist feature is not turned on.
-
Hit the orange Join Waitlist button.
-
You will automatically be added to the Waitlist for all stations in the immediate area. The gray bar near the top of your screen will show how many stations you are in line for.
Tip: Make sure that you have turned on notifications in the app (click the main menu and select Account, then choose Notifications) so we can send updates about your place in line.
-
When you get an alert that you are Up!, accept the spot and it will be reserved for you. Only accept the spot if you are ready to move your car immediately, because the spot will only be reserved for a short amount of time. Do not accept if you cannot move your car right away.
-
If you are busy, hit Snooze to let the next person have the spot and keep your place in line. You can choose how long you want to Snooze. You will not know about open spots until that time is up.
Tip: Some stations only let you hit Snooze a certain number of times before you are taken off the Waitlist. Do not worry, the app will let you know when it is your last chance to snooze.
-
If you no longer need to charge, select Leave Waitlist. Move your EV as soon as you have enough range, so that others can get a turn to charge.
-
You can also save a Waitlist if you want to join specific stations only.
What happens if I do not respond when it is my turn?
If you do not respond when it is your turn in line, you will be automatically snoozed and the next person in line will be offered the spot. Each station owner sets the number of times a driver can snooze. Once you reach your last snooze, you will be removed from the Waitlist if you do not take the spot when it is offered.
How do I leave Waitlist?
If you no longer need a charge when it is your turn, simply click Leave Waitlist to give up your spot. To leave the Waitlist anytime, open the app, click above the map where it shows how many stations you are in line for, then choose Leave Waitlist.
What happens if someone is blocking my spot at the station?
When it is your turn in line, accept the spot in the app and click Report a problem, then choose Car is blocking station. We will put you at the front of the line and offer you the next spot that frees up.
When can I join a Waitlist?
You can join a station’s Waitlist at any time using the ChargePoint app. If Join Waitlist does not appear when you click on a station, it means that waitlist may not be enabled on that station or the station is available for charging.
How do I save a Waitlist?
You can save certain stations to a Waitlist if you want to get in line for those stations on a regular basis. To save a waitlist, complete the following steps:
-
Log in to the driver portal.
-
Open the Waitlist tab, choose Create New Waitlist and select the stations you want to join.
-
Choose a Waitlist name and save the Waitlist.
When you are in a saved Waitlist, you can check your place in line and get notifications when a spot opens up like usual.
Can I auto-join Waitlist?
Waitlist does not support auto-join at this time.
Set up Connections
What are ChargePoint Connections and how do I connect to a station?
Some stations require you to establish a connection to use them or offer special deals (like free or cheap charging) to drivers who connect to them. This might happen at workplaces, apartments, condos, or other places where access to charging is limited to certain groups.
To connect to a specific station or group of stations at a location, complete the following steps:
-
Open the ChargePoint app, or access connections while logged into your account through the driver portal.
-
If you are using the ChargePoint app, navigate to Account > Connections and tap the Browse Connections button.
-
If you are using the driver portal, click Connections from the top nav.
-
-
Search for an organization by name or enter a Connections code if you have one. Enter any additional detail required by the organization (such as license plate number) and click Submit Request.
Tip: Ask your HR department, property management company, or HOA for the ChargePoint Connections code if you do not have it for your workplace, apartment, or condo.
-
Wait for an email notification stating that your request was approved.
-
Once your request is approved, you will be able to start charging at the relevant location or get special energy rates or offers.
You can view your active connections in the app at the same place you set them up. To get more information about your approved connections in the driver portal, click My Connections, under Connections tab.
Where do I get a connection code?
Station owners create their own connection codes and provide them to drivers. ChargePoint cannot provide the codes to customers. If you need a code for a workplace charging station or similar situation, contact your employer’s HR or facilities team to obtain a code.
How long does it take for a connection request to be accepted?
You will typically receive approval for a connection request within a few days. Please contact the station owner with questions.
How can I tell if my connection request has been approved or denied?
Check Account > Connections in the ChargePoint app to see if your connection is active (approved). You will also receive an email notification.
My connection was accepted. Why am I still unable to use a specific station?
It may take some time to process a connection request. Typically, you should be able to use the station within a day of approval.
Why do I have to connect before using certain stations?
Stations on the ChargePoint network are independently owned and operated, so each station owner gets to choose who uses their chargers. You may need a connection code to access some stations.
Drivers with custom charging packages
Why is my payment info requested as part of the sign-up process?
Your credit card details are used to pay for personal charging sessions that are not covered by your employer’s reimbursement policy. Your employer will specify what charging you are reimbursed for, how much and what is considered a personal charging session. Station fees are displayed on the app and on the station, and are set by the station owner, not by ChargePoint. If you only use free stations, you will never be charged. You can always enter or change your payment info later on.
What is included in my EV lease package?
Each custom package is different. You may receive a home charging station as well as an installation package and support. You may also get home and public charging reimbursement depending on the driver package and reimbursement policy which is determined by the employer.
Where do I find my order number?
This will be given to your fleet manager or the HR representative in charge of your company car scheme when your vehicle has an estimated delivery date.
How do I switch between business or personal charging in the ChargePoint app?
If your EV charging package includes paid public charging for business purposes, you can select whether a charging session is for business or personal purposes. Your provider will automatically cover the cost for business charging, and you will pay for any personal charging.
To switch between business and personal charging, complete the following steps:
-
Log in to the ChargePoint app.
-
Tap on Charging Status to see your current charging session.
-
Select Purpose.
-
Select Business or Personal for the session as appropriate.
You may need to add payment info to your account to pay for personal charging sessions.
How do I set up automatic home energy reimbursement with my custom charging package?
If your EV charging package includes home energy reimbursement, it is easy to set it up in the app. After your home charger is installed and activated, enter your bank details and utility price in the app. Your home energy reimbursement will automatically show up in your bank account every month, up to the maximum rate set by your provider.
To set up automatic home energy reimbursement, complete the following steps:
-
Log in to the ChargePoint app.
-
From the main menu at the top left, navigate to Home Charger.
-
Choose Settings, then Reimbursement.
-
Enter your bank details and tap Save.
-
Enter the Average price per kWh that you pay for energy. If you are not sure, check your invoice from your energy provider or their website.
Tip: Your provider may set a maximum reimbursement limit. If the price you pay exceeds this limit, we will notify you.
-
Save your settings.
Tip: You can view your monthly statements at any time under Charging Activity.
